Description

KAP is a hybrid of pharmacology and psychotherapy, and the collaborative therapeutic container is where most trainings go thin. Co-presented by a therapist and a psychiatric prescriber who have delivered individual and group KAP together since 2024, this session centers the clinical work: the three-part KAP protocol (preparation, experiential, integration) and the therapist's role in each phase, the difference between psycholytic and psychedelic/transpersonal processes and the therapeutic stance each asks of the clinician, how KAP differs from medical-model ketamine therapy, and what intake, screening, and adverse-effect management look like inside a collaborative, cross-discipline model of care. The session closes with the Ohio landscape: current ethical and legal considerations for KAP practice, including anticipated guidance from the CSWMFT Board. After this training participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three elements of the KAP protocol (preparation, experiential session, integration) and the therapist's role in each

  • Compare psycholytic and psychedelic/transpersonal treatment processes and the therapeutic stance each requires

  • Explain the differences between medical-model ketamine therapy and KAP, including the advantages and limitations of each

  • Identify key intake and screening considerations for a client beginning KAP, including common adverse effects and their mitigation strategies

  • Describe the current Ohio ethical and regulatory landscape for KAP practice, including anticipated guidance from the CSWMFT Board

Jay Karr

LPCC-S, NCC

Jay Karr, LPCC-S, NCC is a therapist, trainer, and clinical supervisor in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and a leading voice in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy in Ohio. His work rests on one conviction: a secure relationship is part of the medicine, and ethics is how that care is held safely. Founder of Reclaim Your Path and co-founder of LuminaThera, he has practiced KAP since 2022 and trains clinicians nationally, including for the American Counseling Association and Journey Clinical. He received the Ohio Counseling Association Professional Leadership Award in 2025.

Justin Kerr

APRN, PMHNP-BC

Justin Kerr, APRN, PMHNP-BC is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and prescriber in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, practicing since 2013 across dual diagnosis treatment, severe and persistent mental illness, community mental health, and LGBTQ care. His work rests on one conviction: prescribing belongs inside the therapeutic relationship, not alongside it. Co-founder of LuminaThera, he has delivered group and individual KAP with a coordinated clinical team since 2024, and he has developed and facilitated PMHNP curriculum, including neuroscience and psychopharmacology. Additional training includes EMDR therapy and MBSR.
