Description

Clients are already having psychedelic experiences, with or without their therapist's involvement. This training equips clinicians to meet them ethically and effectively without stepping outside their scope. Co-presented by a clinical counselor and a psychiatric prescriber, the session covers the temporal arc of psychedelic experiences (preparation, active experience, integration), harm-reduction principles for clients who use or are considering psychedelics outside clinical settings, and the influence of set and setting on safety and outcomes. Central to the training is scope clarity: what psychedelic integration work is, what it is not, and where the ethical line sits between supporting a client's meaning-making and facilitating substance use. Participants leave with a practice framework they can apply the next time a client brings a psychedelic experience into the room. After this training participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three temporal phases of psychedelic experiences (preparation, active experience, integration)

  • Apply harm-reduction principles when supporting clients who use or are considering psychedelics outside clinical settings

  • Identify the ethical scope of psychedelic integration work, including the boundary between integration support and facilitation of substance use

  • Describe how set and setting influence client safety and outcomes

He received the Ohio Counseling Association Professional Leadership Award in 2025.

Justin Kerr

APRN, PMHNP-BC

Justin Kerr, APRN, PMHNP-BC is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and prescriber in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, practicing since 2013 across dual diagnosis treatment, severe and persistent mental illness, community mental health, and LGBTQ care. His work rests on one conviction: prescribing belongs inside the therapeutic relationship, not alongside it.
