Description

This course explores the intersection of science, clinical wisdom, and transpersonal psychology by examining how intuition emerges within the therapeutic relationship. Contemporary research in neuroscience suggests that intuitive knowing may represent a sophisticated integration of implicit learning. Therefore, it is not surprising that many therapists can recall moments when they sensed something important before it was explicitly stated by a client. While these experiences are often described as intuition, they are rarely discussed in traditional clinical training programs. In this training, participants will learn the neuroscience behind clinical intuition, how to remain within an ethical framework when working with clients, applying therapeutic modalities that implement introspective experiences for clients, and how contemplative practices enhance self-awareness, emotional regulation, attentional control, and the ability to recognize subtle clinical information. Participants will be encouraged to cultivate curiosity about their own internal experiences, strengthen their capacity for presence, and develop a clinically grounded understanding of intuition as a professional competency that supports assessment, case conceptualization, and therapeutic effectiveness.

  • Define and apply clinical intuition and distinguish it from personal bias, assumption, projection, countertransference, and clinical judgment.

  • Describe and apply the relationship between the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) Model, implicit memory networks, and intuitive pattern recognition in clinical practice.

  • Identify and learn at least three neuroscience-informed mechanisms that contribute to intuitive awareness, including implicit processing, somatic markers, and embodied cognition.

  • Explain and apply how mindfulness and contemplative practices support attentional control, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and therapeutic attunement.

  • Describe the role of therapeutic presence in fostering client safety, engagement, and positive treatment outcomes.

  • Recognize somatic, emotional, cognitive, and relational cues that may contribute to intuitive clinical understanding during psychotherapy sessions.

  • Identify ethical considerations and professional boundaries related to the use of intuition in psychotherapy, including cultural humility, informed consent, and scope of practice.

  • Develop a personalized framework for cultivating clinical intuition through mindfulness, self-reflection, consultation, and ongoing professional development.
